Affordable housing
is our kuleana
Removing land and property from the speculative real estate market to be held in trust for the benefit of North Kohala residents for generations to come.
THE MISSION
-
Provide permanently affordable rental and for-sale housing for Kohala residents, primarily by acquiring and rehabilitating the existing housing stock.
-
Support jobs for Kohala residents by acquiring commercial spaces and agricultural land and offering affordable leases to Kohala-grown businesses.
-
Protect the ʻāina and the diverse cultures and rural character of Kohala.
WHAT IS A CLT?
-
Community land trusts(CLTs) are nonprofits that buy and own real estate, keeping it in community control for community benefit.
-
A CLT acquires or builds homes that can be bought by or leased to community members. The CLT always retains ownership of the land, thus keeping the homes affordable for residents.
-
Community land trusts can also own commercial buildings and can steward land for agriculture, cultural or environmental purposes.
MANAGED BY THE COMMUNITY
-
Decisions are made by members of the Kohala community, not by an outside Board.
-
KCLT voting membership is open to all North Kohala full-time residents above the age of 18. Non-residents are invited to join and participate in a supportive role.
-
Resident members elect the Board of Directors.
-
The membership is accountable to the community by approving KCLT goals, and policies and procedures that support those goals.
